Financing

NFF is a Community Development Financial Institution that provides loans and other financing to help nonprofits and social enterprises expand opportunities in their communities. With over 40 years of experience, our products have responded to the real-time needs of organizations that are contributing to the wellbeing and resilience of communities across the US.

Our financing supports organizations in education, community improvement, health, homelessness and housing, human services, social justice, workforce development, youth development, and more. We customize loans to help organizations with everything from creating community centers to building new health centers, as well as bridging capital campaign pledges or government contract payments.

Financing Options

Acquisition and construction loans

Access to affordable, quality facilities and functioning equipment is critical for mission success. We provide loans to purchase, build or upgrade your sites and facilities, including leasehold improvements and equipment needs.

We’ve helped charter schools add classrooms, a supportive housing organization acquire new sites, and theaters renovate performance halls, and assisted countless other organizations with their facility or real estate financing needs.

Working capital

All organizations need funds to manage daily operations and to finance future growth.

We provide lines of credit and flexible loans to address your cash needs – whether you manage a behavioral health organization adapting to new forms of payment, or need capital to scale a foster-care reduction program.

Bridge loans

We can help you cover costs and begin facilities projects while awaiting payment of government or foundation grants or capital campaigns.

We have provided bridge loans to help kick-start projects by nonprofits ranging from a community health center to an urban farm.

New Markets Tax Credits

NFF has used NMTC to finance organizations and projects that increase access to human services, healthcare, education, arts and culture, youth and workforce development, and much more in communities across the US.

NFF's financing and New Markets Tax Credits allocation provided a critical part of the community financing we needed to support Make the Road New York's construction of a new center in Queens. The center will double the space we have in Queens for programming and frontline services for the immigrant and working class communities of color that we serve. NFF has been an insightful and collaborative partner.

Churches United for Fair Housing came to NFF for a bridge loan in order to help pay the deposit for the building we selected as our permanent headquarters. NFF took our vision without any hesitation or reservation. They did not act like a lender but acted like a friend. We're unconventional and not the type of organization that would be embraced by typical lending and banking. Our dreams are becoming a reality and that would not have been possible without NFF. This transition from vision to reality, from hope to achievement is happening today because of NFF’s investment in us and its faith in us.

We got a $10 million grant from the local district attorney’s office, but there were issues with how the grant was structured – line-item reimbursable, quarterly invoices that would take six months to get paid. At times, we had close to $1 million in outstanding receivables from government contracts. We had to use all of our unrestricted funds while waiting for payment, and even that wasn't enough. As a small nonprofit, this almost sunk us, putting us at risk of not making payroll and having to delay payments to vendors. NFF provided us with a $1-million line of credit, which saved us from having to stop operations and provided the cash we needed to keep programs going while we waited on delayed contract payments.

Our homeless neighbors are best served when supportive services, health care, and housing are integrated, providing permanent solutions to end homelessness in their lives. NFF bridged a critical financing need, which allowed us to move forward with the second phase of our transformative Campus development, a regional hub that will serve thousands in our community.

Our financing partnership with NFF has allowed RISE Prep to deliver on its ambitious goals and mission in a building that truly reflects the excellent work happening inside each classroom. NFF has been unwavering in its dedication and support since our earliest conversations in 2016. Their flexibility and commitment in the face of adversity helped RISE Prep purchase and build out an exceptional facility for RISE Prep's scholars, which has made all the difference in RISE Prep's long-term sustainability and success.
